Congratulations to Dr Ishara Atukorala and Dr Lucy Bartho who were both successful in the recent academic promotions.
Dr Ishara Atukorala was promoted to Level B and Dr Lucy Bartho was promoted to Level C.
Dr Ishara Atukorala is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Prof Lisa Hui's perinatal research team. Her work uses extracellular vesicles from fetal fluids to study congenital infections, with a focus on congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). She is currently working on an NHMRC-funded project identifying amniotic fluid and fetal blood EV biomarkers linked to cCMV prognosis.
Dr Lucy Bartho is a Senior Research Fellow in the Translational Obstetrics Group, co-led by Professor Tu’uhevaha Kaitu’u-Lino and Professor Stephen Tong. She completed her PhD in 2021, before moving to Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, Mercy Hospital for Women, University of Melbourne. Her current research aims to improve outcomes for mothers and babies through the discovery of novel biomarkers for preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, and new therapeutics for ectopic pregnancy. She uses large-scale omics, screening technologies, and experimental placental models, while investigating the molecular drivers of placental dysfunction. The overall goal is to translate these discoveries into clinical applications.
