Genomics Indigenous Undergraduate Study (GENIUS) Program
The University of Melbourne’s Department of Paediatrics is accepting applications for the Genomics Indigenous Undergraduate Study (GENIUS) Program. The GENIUS program a paid studentship which aims to introduce Indigenous undergraduate students to genetic counselling and genomics and health through real-world research opportunities.
The GENIUS program runs for up to 30 days, and is based in the Department of Paediatrics, located at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Students will work with academic staff from the Master of Genetic Counselling and Master of Genomics and Health degrees.
The specific project can be tailored to the supervisor and student’s shared interests and skillset. Some examples of potential projects include :
- Developing a story-based resource explaining an aspect of genetics to a young person.
- Developing a frequently asked questions guide for students curious about what genetic counselling and genomics and health is.
- Producing a short podcast or video about genomics aimed at the general population.
In addition, there will be opportunities for students to attend seminars and educational activities and present their work to faculty members.
The studentship is conducted primarily face-to-face, in the Department of Paediatrics, and timing is flexible to accommodate study, outside work, and personal commitments. Participants are employed casually at the PASO 2.1 rate of $43.20 per hour.
