Thesis Title: The Accuracy of an Abbreviated Echocardiographic Protocol for the Detection of Congenital Heart Disease in Newborns

Thesis Summary:

The objective of this thesis was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of an abbreviated echocardiogram protocol for the detection of major congenital heart disease (CHD) in newborns. First, an audit of neonatal patients transported for cardiac care established patient eligibility parameters. Second, an evaluation of scope of practice for clinicians who might use such a tool was undertaken, and a training module developed. Third, the trial protocol was successfully tested on 75 neonates undergoing the gold-standard full echocardiogram for comparison.
