Thesis Title: Assessing the methodology and feasibility of blood pressure screening in children and adolescents across community and clinical settings

Thesis Summary: Childhood high blood pressure (BP) is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in mid-adulthood. Early screening, diagnosis and management of high BP from childhood presents a critical opportunity to delay or prevent cardiovascular disease onset in adulthood. I assessed the methodology and feasibility of general childhood BP screening in schools and targeted at home screening for hospital outpatients, as well as the accuracy of an automated BP measurement device. I found that screening is effective, acceptable and feasible in schools and home, while determining factors causing inaccuracy across BP devices, setting the stage for population trialling of childhood BP screening.
