University of Melbourne Rural Medical Pathway delivers next generation of doctors to Rural Victoria
Eight University of Melbourne rural medical graduates have secured positions in the VRGP Hume – Murray to the Mountains Intern Training Program (M2M), which will see them gain hands-on experience at Northeast Health Wangaratta.
In 2027, five of the ten intern positions in Wangaratta have been awarded to graduates of the University of Melbourne’s Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) program, delivered in Echuca, Shepparton and Wangaratta. A further three positions have been awarded to University of Melbourne Ballarat campus Doctor of Medicine Rural Clinical School graduates.
The VRGP Hume – Murray to the Mountains Intern Training Program (M2M) provides medical graduates with an immersive rural training experience across Northeast Health Wangaratta and Albury Wodonga Health, including extended Rural General Practice rotations within the Hume region.
Dr Steven Bismire, Interim Director Medical Student Education at the Department of Rural Health said it’s a fantastic representation of the work being done to support and develop the rural medical workforce.
“To see eight of the ten 2027 M2M Wangaratta intern positions filled by graduates from the University of Melbourne’s Rural Clinical School Doctor of Medicine program highlights the strength of the pathway and its commitment to preparing future doctors for practice in rural and regional communities.
Given the competitive nature of the Murray to Mountains Intern Program, this outcome is a testament to the quality of our upcoming graduates.
Programs like M2M provide invaluable hands-on experience across a range of healthcare settings and help build confidence, skills and connections that encourage long-term careers in rural and regional centres,” Dr Bismire said.
Congratulations to the 2027 VRGP Hume – Murray to the Mountains interns as they begin the next stage of their medical careers.
