Empowering Health in Aboriginal Communities

Welcome to the new group of students undertaking the Specialist Certificate in Empowering Health in Aboriginal communities.

Students travelled from rural Queensland, NT and Victoria to commence their course at a week-long intensive at the Department of Rural Health’s Shepparton campus. They will now complete their studies taking part in weekly online tutorials while developing and implementing projects in their local communities.

Recognising and drawing on their work experience in health and community development, the course provides pathways to tertiary education for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians who live and work in their community. It introduces students to health-related knowledges from critical social science and Aboriginal cultural perspectives; empowering Aboriginal health professionals in their place of work and allowing students to study and work in their communities for the development of both.
