Alfred, who is originally from Mildura, applied for the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) because it allows him to study his entire medical degree in a rural setting to prepare for a future career in rural medicine.

Meet Alfred

What made you apply for the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) program?

I have always been interested in the medical field and, as someone who grew up rurally, I want to return to the regional side to work. This program, being rural throughout the whole four years, made it an easy choice as it allows me to gain experience on how the rural medical system functions to help me prepare for my future career.

What have been the highlights of the course so far?

So far the best part of this course has been the opportunity to talk with real patients. These included the fortnightly GP placement where we got to shadow a GP and the monthly hospital rotation alongside a fourth-year medical student (MD4).

What advice would you give to other students considering applying for the course?

My biggest advice would be to take all the opportunities you can to interact with patients as this will help you develop your skills on how to engage with all types of patients.
