Jarred Donlan
Meet Jarred
Prior to enrolling in the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway), Jarred Donlan followed a unique path into medicine, serving in the Australian Defence Force, while managing his family’s farm, and later completed an undergraduate degree in Paramedicine, and raising his six children. Together, these experiences shaped his passion for healthcare and his commitment to improving health outcomes in rural and regional communities.
Growing up near Orange, New South Wales, Jarred spent much of his childhood helping on the family sheep and cattle farm, and participating in local sport.
“Growing up in a rural community, I saw firsthand the impact that limited access to healthcare can have on individuals and communities, and the effect it can have on health outcomes.
I’ve always wanted to study medicine, and the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) gave me the opportunity to pursue that lifelong goal while continuing to live and learn in a rural setting,” Jarred explains.
Reflecting on his three years of study, Jarred notes the clinical placements he completed in Shepparton and Wangaratta have been among the highlights of his medical degree.
“I really enjoyed my placements at Northeast Health Wangaratta, Princess Park Clinic and Shepparton Medical Centre. The staff were incredibly welcoming and invested in supporting upcoming doctors by sharing their knowledge and experience,” Jarred reflects.
Outside of his medical studies, Jarred maintains an active lifestyle and enjoys a range of sports, including hitting the ski slopes in winter, participating in park runs, exploring local bike tracks, playing tennis and refining his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills.
One of the aspects he has valued most throughout his studies has been the opportunity to connect with his fellow classmates and meeting people in the local community, making him feel more connected to the region.
“The people I’ve met throughout my studies remind me of the community I grew up in. Rural communities have a unique way of supporting one another through challenges such as droughts, fires and floods, and that sense of connection and resilience is something I’ve always valued.”
Looking ahead, Jarred hopes to play a role in strengthening the growing rural healthcare workforce. He is passionate about helping bridge the gap between metropolitan and rural healthcare, ensuring people living in regional and rural communities have access to the same high-quality care and opportunities as those in larger centres.
“I think the key is providing accessible and affordable healthcare close to home, without the need for excessive travel, and ensuring local communities have access to the services they need.
“Don’t focus too much on how daunting medical school can seem. Just take the opportunity and back yourself. Before long, you’ll be finishing your degree with incredible memories and experiences that make the journey worthwhile,” Jarred says.
With just one year of study left, Jarred is excited about the opportunity to give back to the communities that inspired his journey into medicine.
“I’m looking forward to starting my medical career and returning home to be closer to my wife and six beautiful children,” he says.
