Joseph (Joe) grew up in Bendigo in regional Victoria and so, naturally he has a passion for rural areas and communities. Having just completed his first year of medicine, Joe reflects on his time and shares some insight into the program for those who are considering applying.
Meet Joe
What made you apply for the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) program?
This course combines my passion for rural and regional areas with healthcare. It allows me to fulfill my dream of providing high quality healthcare to rural people who previously have had inadequate access.
I may be biased but I believe country people are the best people and I want to do my part in ensuring they do not have to travel hundreds of kilometres to a large metropolitan area to receive healthcare when it should be available closer to home. I have heard firsthand from countless people how much of a barrier this is.
What have been the highlights of the course so far?
As my first year comes to a close some of my highlights of the course include:
- Placement in GP clinics and hospitals gaining hands on experience with real patients has been the most memorable. The reason we are all in medicine is to help people, this felt like out first step to becoming real doctors
- Clinical skills tutorials, learning from healthcare professionals with a wealth of knowledge and skills has been invaluable
- The smorgasbord of extracurricular activities and opportunities available to us throughout the year from rural ball to student conference and rural retreat has allowed me to develop friendships with my peers which truly has been the best part
What advice would you give to other students considering applying for the course?
Apply! Medical students have a reputation for being super intelligent, hardworking and dedicated but we are just regular people with a passion for healthcare.
