Department of Surgery Preparation for Internship Surgical Workshop

The Northern and Western Departments of Surgery, University of Melbourne hosted a novel joint event on the 17th October 2023 at the Northern Health Centre for Research and Education to help senior medical students develop surgical skills to better prepare them for internship.

This event was led by Professor Shekhar Kumta, Professor of Surgery at the Northern Precinct and Dr Krinal Mori Consultant Surgeon and Education Lead at Northern Health and in collaboration with Dr Chiu Kang and Dr Toan Pham, Consultant Surgeons at Northern Health as well as Professor Justin Yeung, Head of the Department of Surgery, Western Precinct. Medical students from both Northern and Western Precincts had opportunities to immerse themselves in several aspects of surgical training including advanced laparoscopic skills and skin suturing, orthopaedic fracture treatment and plastering, application of advanced wound management systems as well as understand the role of drain tubes and stoma therapy.

Feedback from this workshop was excellent with many of the students suggesting that this event should form part of the core skills teaching as part of intern preparation. The event could not have happened without the support from the Department of Surgery, the simulation suite at Northern Health, the support from industry as well as surgical nursing support, in particular members from the stomal therapy team.

Due to the positive feedback, we hope to run similar events in 2024.
