Rotating Lecture Series by SSSM

The Rotating Lecture Series is an education initiative organized by the Surgical Students’ Society of Melbourne (SSSM) with the aim of providing insight into different surgical specialties to medical students.

The first lecture of the series took place at the Parkville campus on the evening of 11th March 2020. A/Prof Justin Yeung, Colorectal Consultant at Western Health, kicked off the series with his talk - What I Wish I Knew as an Aspiring Surgeon - a view from an academic colorectal surgeon. It was well attended by over 70 students. The lecture covered A/Prof Yeung’s journey of surgical training from the perspective of a colorectal surgeon – with focus on aspects relevant to medical students. This was followed by an insight into his academic role in research, and its importance for advancements in clinical medicine and in surgical intervention. Students were then presented with a short video of a colorectal surgery. This was met with great interest and much enthusiasm from students who are yet to experience their surgical rotation. The session concluded with a Q&A session. Students left the evening enthusiastic, wanting to continue to explore more about surgery as a future career choice.
