The Animal Welfare Excellence (AWE) Awards program recognises innovative contributions toward the 3Rs of animal care and use in research and teaching to advance ethical science by any researcher, research group or personnel at the University of Melbourne. These awards are meant to promote and inspire the use of the 3Rs (the Replacement, Reduction or Refinement of animal use) in research and teaching at the University of Melbourne and to recognize the dedication and effort of researchers and personnel implementing the 3Rs.
Multiple awards are presented with cash prizes pulled from a joint pool up to $13,000.
1st place: $5,000
2nd place: $3,000
3rd place: $2,000
Highly Commended: $1,000 each
Nominations should be based on research or teaching that advances the 3Rs in the last two (2) years, and candidates are able to self-nominate or nominate others. These may include modifications to existing research or teaching techniques or any innovative research or teaching approach including, but not limited to: improvements to whole-animal models, replacements or alternatives to animal models (full or partial) and study design or technique refinements (e.g., sampling technologies, improved test methods).
