Department of Surgery Northern and Western Health Surgical Students Workshop
The Northern and Western Departments of Surgery, University of Melbourne hosted a novel joint event on Wednesday 17th April 2024 at the Western Centre for Health Research and Education to help senior medical students develop surgical skills to better prepare them for internship.

Led by Professor Justin Yeung and Professor Shekhar Kumta, 30 final year medical students attended a tailored skills day which included workshops on laparoscopy, fracture and plaster cast management, urological skills, stomal therapy, ED suturing, and VAC dressing management.

These workshops were facilitated by a team of consultants and research fellows including Dr Krinal Mori, Dr Fiona Reid, A/Prof Darren Katz, Dr Wen Liu, Dr Matt Wei, Dr Shriranshini Satheakeerthy, Dr Adi Salkalkale, Dr Lily Salehi, Dr Ben McElwee, and Stomal therapist Diana Hayes.


In the afternoon, academic skills included top tips to succeed in research and how to incorporate research as a medical student, an example of an innovation in health care as well as introducing innovation as the alternative to research.
