SSSM Surgical Careers Night 2026

The SSSM Surgical Careers Night brings together clinicians from nine different surgical specialties across multiple hospital networks for an evening designed to give University of Melbourne medical students broader exposure to surgical careers.

Each one-hour specialty session will feature senior consultant surgeons, with Fellows, trainees and more recently admitted surgeons also involved in facilitating the discussion and sharing their perspectives. This gives students an opportunity to hear both from established leaders in each field and from clinicians who have more recently navigated the specialty training pathway.

Students will be able to select from concurrent specialty sessions across the evening, hearing directly about day-to-day life within each specialty, training pathways, career opportunities, and involvement in research. A key focus of the event is providing students from clinical schools where exposure to particular surgical specialties may be limited with an opportunity to engage directly with clinicians working in those fields.

Meet the panellists for SSSM’s 2026 Surgical Careers Night! We’re excited to reveal some of the surgeons joining us for our long-awaited annual flagship event, representing a diverse range of surgical specialties and career pathways.
This year’s panel includes Prof Justin Yeung (Colorectal Surgery), Prof Richard de Steiger (Orthopaedic Surgery), Dr Eric Levi (ENT), Dr Alison Bryant-Smith (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Dr Krinal Mori (General Surgery), Dr Ekaterina Jovic (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Mr Bernard Allard (Vascular Surgery), and Dr Paul Goodyear (ENT), with many more panellists still to come!
This is your chance to hear directly from surgeons across different fields about their training journeys, specialty choices, day-to-day careers and advice for students considering surgery.
