Western Region Alcohol and Drug Health Research Network

Research Overview

The North Western Metropolitan area of Melbourne, and the wider western region of Victoria is one of the most culturally diverse and largest population growth areas of the state. Melbourne’s west is also home to some of the highest rates of preventable diseases in the population, with indicators show significant areas of health need particularly in relation to chronic disease (e.g. obesity, type 2 diabetes), mental health, sexual health, and alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and harms. AOD use and misuse and related factors make a significant contribution to mortality and morbidity in Melbourne’s west. The primary aim of this network of key stakeholders in the region is to operate as an accessible hub of expertise and capacity building in relation to identifying and responding to AOD health related research needs in the western region of Melbourne.
