Why become a GP?
More than just coughs and colds, a career in general practice offers flexibility, variety, the ability to provide lifelong care and the opportunity to grow.
Isn't it all just coughs and colds?
People sometimes comment that GPs only see patients with coughs and colds but this is actually one of the least common presentations. On any given day GPs may be asked for advice on mental health, dermatology, diabetes, cancer, child health, domestic and family violence, sexual health, women's and men's health, cardiology ... and more. To be a GP, you need a broad knowledge base and a wide skill set.
What about career growth?
A career in general practice offers opportunities to grow in research, academia, policy, advocacy, leadership, teaching and education. As a GP you are not locked in to one modality. You have the flexibility to nurture individual interests and develop new skills, which can lead to opportunities for career progression and greater job satisfaction.
Can I make an impact as a GP?
GPs are often the first point of contact that people have with the health system and sometimes they are the only person that patients feel they can confide in. They are trusted and respected members of their community that make an impact on people's lives everyday.
