Communication and Ethics for IMGs

These resources were created to assist IMGs and medical educators to explore communication, language, ethics, and cultural issues in relation to health care practice in Australia. They include scenarios of doctor-patient communication, interviews with established IMGs, and workshop materials.

Communication and Ethics for International Medical Graduates in Australia was developed as a DVD multimedia resource for IMGs and medical educators in 2009 with funding from the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria. It was developed by Dr Robyn Woodward-Kron, Dr Eleanor Flynn, and Ms Margo Collins, from the University of Melbourne.

As this technology is no longer available and the resources are still relevant, we have made the content available here.

These three scenarios cover the topics of disclosing a clinical error, talking about alcohol with teenagers, and dealing with a patient who makes racist remarks. The accompanying workshop resource contains questions to explore communication, language, ethics, and cultural issues raised in these scenarios.

These interviews provide reflections from six IMGs on their experiences completing training in Australia and the differences compared to their home countries.
