About Us
Medicine at Western Health conducts high quality research into acute and chronic diseases common in the western suburbs of Melbourne. We are a multidisciplinary group who has extensive experience in the design and conduct of large-scale, clinical randomised controlled trials, and public health and translational research.
We are also a key founding partner of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science; a collaborative institute for research into disorders of bone, muscle and joint; and the promotion of disease prevention and evidence-based interventions including exercise and nutrition. Our Academic Lead
Professor Gustavo Duque, Academic Lead of Medicine @ Western Health, is a geriatrician and bone biologist with a research interest in the mechanisms of age-related bone loss, osteoporosis and frailty in older persons. His major research interests include the elucidation of the mechanisms of age-related bone loss, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and frailty. He is also looking at the effect of vitamin D, exercise and proteins on bone and muscle mass. Finally, he is implementing a new Falls and Fractures clinic at Sunshine Hospital where patients are assessed for falls and fractures risk in a comprehensive manner.
