Mercy Hospital for Women

The Medical Elective Program at  Mercy Hospital For Women is administered by the University of Melbourne, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at Mercy Hospital For Women. This includes medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students. Our placements are only available to enrolled medical students who have completed their women’s health or obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal rotations before their clinical elective placement.

ALL elective enquiries must be directed to the Elective Coordinator. Please DO NOT contact hospital clinicians or staff directly. Please contact the Elective Coordinator at   mhw-electives@unimelb.edu.au.

We only offer electives in obstetrics and/or gynaecology or neonatal paediatrics. For general medicine, surgery, paediatrics and other placements there are other University of Melbourne affiliated hospitals that offer these disciplines, please click here.

Current status of obstetrics & gynaecology elective placements:

2023 elective placements - placements may be offered in November and December 2023

Our elective placements are clinically based allocations.  Students will be expected to participate in the activities of the unit while under the supervision of hospital staff, where there will be many opportunities to engage in clinical activities in relation to patient assessment and patient care.  Although there may be opportunities to attend current tutorials, The University of Melbourne does not provide assessment or formal teaching sessions related to your approved elective placement.

All obstetrics and gynaecology elective placements are only available for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks.

Royal Women's Hospital

The medical student elective program at The Royal Women’s Hospital is administered by The University of Melbourne, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health based at The Royal Women’s Hospital.  This includes medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students including those based at The University of Melbourne. Our placements are only available to currently enrolled medical students who have completed their women’s health or obstetrics, gynaecology and/or neonatology rotation before their clinical elective placement.  Please note these elective placements are designed to augment or supplement prior learning and not replace or act as a stand-alone women’s health or obstetrics and gynaecology medical student placement.

Current status of obstetrics & gynaecology elective placements:

  • 2024 elective placements - placements may be offered in November and December 2024.  Applications will open from February 2024.

Our obstetrics and gynaecology elective placements are clinically based allocations.  Students will be expected to participate in the activities of the unit while under the supervision of hospital staff.  There will be many opportunities to engage in clinical activities in relation to patient assessment and patient care.  Although there may be opportunities to attend hospital educational activities, please note elective placements occur outside the usual academic year and The University of Melbourne does not provide assessment or formal teaching sessions related to your approved elective placement.

All obstetrics and gynaecology elective placements are only available for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks.  Occasionally shorter duration placements can be negotiated on a case by case basis.

Current status of neonatology placements:

  • Placements may be offered subject to availability.  Please email the electives coordinator indicating the proposed dates and duration of your elective.

Our neonatal elective placements can be either clinical or research based.
