Royal Women's Hospital Medical Electives Program

We offer electives in obstetrics and/or gynaecology and some neonatal placements.

General medicine, surgery, paediatrics and other placements are offered by other University of Melbourne affiliated hospitals.

Our elective placements are clinically based allocations. Students will be expected to participate in the unit's activities while under the hospital staff's supervision, where there will be many opportunities to engage in clinical activities in relation to patient assessment and patient care. Our neonatal elective placements can be either clinical or research-based.

Although there may be opportunities to attend current tutorials, please note elective placements occur outside the usual academic year, and the University of Melbourne does not provide assessment or formal teaching sessions related to these elective placements.

Eligibility for placements

Placements are available to enrolled medical students who have completed their women's health or obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal rotations before the clinical elective placement. We accept medical elective requests from both Australian and overseas medical students.

Availability of placements

Elective placements may be offered in November and December 2024. Placements are for a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks.

How to apply

Applications for 2024 placements are open from February 2024 to the end of April 2024.  Please note that an application does not guarantee a placement.

"Thank you for organising my elective experience at the RWH at the end of last year. It was by far the most fun I have had at any placement and was also an amazing learning experience."
