Understanding what happens when antidepressants are stopped
Dr Alec Jamieson recently featured in an article by The Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing, on his research exploring the brain mechanisms behind antidepressant withdrawal to support safer, more informed clinical decisions
For some people, stopping antidepressants can be challenging as withdrawal symptoms can be difficult to distinguish from a return of depression, creating uncertainty for consumers, families and clinicians.
Alec's research uses ultra-high-field brain imaging to explore the neurological processes behind antidepressant discontinuation and focuses on understanding the brain mechanisms that underpin mood and anxiety disorders, with the goal of improving how treatments are delivered and ensuring people receive the care that is right for them.
