RoBiN (Risk of Breast Neoplasia): An acceptability and feasibility study of personalised screening

Project Details

The RoBiN study, endorsed by BreastScreen Victoria (BSV) aims to provide Australian women aged 40-59 with a personalised approach to breast cancer screening by offering a risk assessment which incorporates major known breast cancer risk factors (family history, mammographic breast density [MBD], and a polygenic risk score [PRS]). The multifactorial risk assessment and/or MBD will be used to tailor subsequent screening recommendations based on the individual’s personal risk of developing breast cancer as an alternative to the current population-based age-stratified approach.

Clinical and genomic risk factors will be combined to calculate 10-year and lifetime risk of breast cancer using the validated BRISK model. The calculated risk will be mapped onto risk categories defined by Cancer Australia and used to tailor supplemental and subsequent breast cancer screening. Participants and a nominated general practitioner (GP) or practice clinic will receive a risk report summarising their breast cancer risk, recommendations for any supplemental screening or changes to frequency of subsequent screening.

This acceptability and feasibility study will explore the acceptability and feasibility of using this approach to conduct risk-stratified breast cancer screening within BSV, as well as piloting the intervention and procedures to inform the design of future larger implementation trials.
