Professor Karen Dwyer

Lead: Professor Karen Dwyer

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Nephrology, led by Professor Karen Dwyer, is driven by a commitment to improving the lives of people living with kidney disease, both in Australia and worldwide. Through a collaborative and integrated approach, we combine basic science, clinical research, and health service innovation to tackle the grand challenges in nephrology.

Our basic science program explores the biological mechanisms of kidney disease at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels, laying the foundation for new treatments and diagnostics. In parallel, our clinical research focuses on the real-world effects and complications of kidney failure.

We are also a leading centre for clinical trials, offering patients early access to promising therapies for transplantation, various kidney diseases, and genetic kidney conditions. Beyond treatment, our health service research aims to improve the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of kidney care. Projects include mapping the patient journey in advanced CKD and developing co-designed care models that reflect the values and preferences of those living with kidney disease. New initiatives are also exploring how supported self-management can enhance post-transplant metabolic health.

Education is central to our mission. We actively support higher degree students and physician trainees through academic partnerships with the University of Melbourne.
