Islet Biology and Metabolism Research Group

Research Overview

The Islet Biology and Metabolism Laboratory, led by Dr Barbara White at Austin Health, investigates the fundamental mechanisms driving obesity and type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on beta-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance, and the progression of complications such as diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Using well-established animal models of obesity and diabetes, the laboratory explores how these metabolic disorders develop and progress, providing critical insights into disease pathways and potential intervention points. A key strand of the group’s work involves assessing the efficacy of novel therapeutics in pre-clinical models, generating essential data on safety, mechanism of action, and glucose and body weight lowering potential. This research not only establishes a strong foundation for identifying new therapeutic targets but also aims to accelerate the translation of these discoveries into effective clinical treatments that improve the lives of people living with metabolic disease.
