Nutrition and Bone Health Research Group

Research Overview

Based at the Austin Hospital, our research focuses on the role of nutrition in maintaining optimal bone health over the life span. Much of the focus now is on older adults and how nutrition may help prevent bone loss and fracture risk. Our work has demonstrated that providing dairy foods (milk, yoghurt, cheese) in line with recommendations improves protein and calcium intake in aged care residents and is associated with decreased fractures, falls and prevented decline in weight, muscle and bone loss, and nutritional status. Current projects include food service staff training in aged care to improve protein and calcium provision to aged care residents, dementia specific strategies to improve food intake in older adults with dementia and the role of oral health in food intake.
