Gastroenterology and Endoscopic Services Departments, Western Health
Within Gastroenterology, we conduct research in the key areas of viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis), chronic liver disease and Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea. Within Endoscopic Services, our investigator-initiated research has focused on ways to improve our endoscopic clinical outcomes, as well as on quality assurance and audit measures.

General Internal Medicine
The General Medicine Research Group aims to develop clinical and health services research that is closely aligned to the areas of greatest burden to hospital services at Western Health. This therefore emphasizes particular issues relating to migrant groups and elderly patients with high rates of multi-morbidity.

The Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research conduct clinical research in the fields of emergency medicine and pre-hospital care.
Nephrology Department
Our clinicians, nursing and allied health staff are actively involved in research to help better understand and treat kidney diseases and improve patient outcomes. We lead and participate in national and international research trials including quality improvement projects, pharmaceutical sponsored trials while strongly collaborating with the Australian Kidney Trials Network to contribute to research initiated by some of Australia’s leading nephrologists.

The group is interested in researching the role played by the environment on musculoskeletal disease: sarcopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Western Health Cancer Research
Our clinical research service provides a fully comprehensive oncology clinical trials service that includes the conduct of clinical trials across multiple tumour streams. This is within a rapidly expanding Medical Oncology and Haematology unit with trials ranging from investigator driven and collaborative trials, to pharmaceutical trials from Phase 1 to 4 of drug development.

Western Health Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Group
The Western Health Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Group is comprised of academic clinicians and higher degree students conducting clinical research primarily in the fields of: 1. obstretic endocrinology 2. diabetes and complications prevention 3. bone health We collaborate with colleagues in Nephrology, Cardiology and Obstetrics, and have strong links with academic partners in Australia and overseas. As part of the Western Chronic Disease Alliance, we study chronic diseases and interventions in the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Western Region Alcohol and Drug Health Research Network
The primary aim of this network of key stakeholders in the region is to operate as an accessible hub of expertise and capacity building in relation to identifying and responding to AOD health related research needs in the western region of Melbourne.
