Medicine at the Western Health conducts high quality research into acute and chronic diseases common in the western suburbs of Melbourne. We are a multidisciplinary group who has extensive experience in the design and conduct of large-scale, clinical randomised controlled trials, and public health and translational research.

Gastroenterology and Endoscopic Services Departments, Western Health

Within Gastroenterology, we conduct research in the key areas of viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis), chronic liver disease and Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea. Within Endoscopic Services, our investigator-initiated research has focused on ways to improve our endoscopic clinical outcomes, as well as on quality assurance and audit measures.

Our clinicians, nursing and allied health staff are actively involved in research to help better understand and treat kidney diseases and improve patient outcomes. We lead and participate in national and international research trials including quality improvement projects, pharmaceutical sponsored trials while strongly collaborating with the Australian Kidney Trials Network to contribute to research initiated by some of Australia’s leading nephrologists.

Western Health Cancer Research

Our clinical research service provides a fully comprehensive oncology clinical trials service that includes the conduct of clinical trials across multiple tumour streams. This is within a rapidly expanding Medical Oncology and Haematology unit with trials ranging from investigator driven and collaborative trials, to pharmaceutical trials from Phase 1 to 4 of drug development.
