NHMRC Ideas Grant Success

Congratulations to Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology researchers Professor Natalie Hannan, Dr Natalie Binder, Associate Professor Lisa Hui and Ms Sally Beard for their success in being awarded an NHMRC Ideas Grant 2021 round (2022 funding) for their project, ‘Improving the pipeline for translation of therapies for serious complications of pregnancy’.

Preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction are deadly complications of pregnancy, without current therapies for either. Development of treatments is seriously limited, pregnant women are excluded from drug trials, due to concerns for both mother and baby. We have developed a dedicated pipeline for drug discovery for pregnancy; we will thoroughly test promising drug candidates and advanced delivery strategies. This proposal paves the way for much needed development of therapies for pregnant women.

Prof Natalie Hannan is the Chief Investigator A, Dr Natalie Binder is the Chief Investigator B and Sally Beard and A/Prof Lisa Hui are Associate Investigators. The NHMRC Ideas Grant awarded $965,934.50 over the years 2022-2025 for the project.

The success rate for these grants was 9.5%, so we are extremely proud of the teams achievement.

We also wanted to congratulate Prof Natalie Hannan for her success in securing a Norman Beischer Medical Research Foundation grant ‘New Horizons in the treatment of preeclampsia: Biologics to inhibit TNF-alpha’ with funding of $59,948, together with Associate Investigators Professor Sue Walker and Dr Alina Roman.
