New INTERACT 2 program awarded an RACGP education research grant

INTERACT 2 is an innovative new teaching project that has just been awarded an RACGP education research grant. The pilot program aims to vertically integrate training in general practice through enhanced interaction between medical students, GP registrars and GP supervisors.

Over the next two years, the project will:

  1. Develop a sustainable and pragmatic model of teacher training and support within the Australian general practice setting.
  2. Support GP registrars to develop the essential teaching competencies required to actively participate in the future GP supervisor workforce.
  3. Explore potential impacts of a positive learning environment in recruiting more medical students to general practice.
  4. Explore the impact of this intervention on GP supervisors and the primary care clinic environment more broadly.
  5. Explore the barriers and facilitators to a wider implementation of the program across Australia.

This is an exciting project because as we know, student interest in general practice has hit an all-time low of just 13.8%. By enhancing student exposure to general practice and providing increased encounters with positive GP role models throughout the teaching lifecycle, it is hoped we will be able to inspire a new generation of passionate generalists.
