Thesis Title: Using simulation-based education to teach hospital staff how to manage behavioural emergencies in children with autism
Thesis Summary: Behavioural emergencies are increasing globally in paediatric health care settings, including in children with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Having a critical mass of well-trained staff who are confident in preventing and managing behavioural emergencies is important. Based on existing data and evidence we designed a simulation training program focussed on managing aggression in children and young people with autism spectrum disorder. Our pilot and feasibility trial indicated that changes in knowledge and skill following training, can be measured.
