People Living with Disabilities

Women and the LGBTI communities living with disabilities can face greater challenges and discrimination in access to sexual and reproductive health services. Additionally, there are long held rights based issues with particular resonance for women and the LGBTI communities living with disability, including sterilization, abortion and fertility, and community attitudes and perceptions of disability, sexuality and gender that challenge rights.

Access and inclusion issues requiring consideration in your practice can include: provision of appropriate health information and accessible medical equipment; and access to health promotion initiatives, including screening.  Consideration for the right to decision-making, autonomy and self-determination; the legacy of a history and culture of exclusion; and the high percentage (70%) of women with disability have been victims of violent sexual encounters at some time in their lives, is also central to quality care.
