The STI-X Project

The STI-X Project

Delivering free STI test kits through vending machines across regional Victoria

About the project

The STI-X project has been developed and delivered by CERSH, and offers free sexually transmitted infection (STI) test kits dispensed through vending machines.

The vending machines aim to provide accessible and affordable sexual health services to regional Victorian communities.Users can obtain a test kit within 60-90 seconds and can complete the specimen collection in a private setting.

Once completed, users post the completed tests to the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre for testing. Individuals requiring treatment will be contacted and will receive appropriate care in a safe and suitable location.

A novel approach to STI testing

Accessing testing for sexually transmissible infections (STI) in regional and rural areas can be challenging for many people. Innovative solutions are necessary to ensure that barriers are minimised for populations who are often disadvantaged by the health system.

Promoting the vending machines

Phase 2 places a strong emphasis on communications and community engagement, with local partners actively involved in the design, installation, and promotion of the project.

For the first time, STI-X has its own dedicated campaign page, built to receive traffic from paid and organic marketing activities. The page is designed to convert awareness into action, giving people who encounter STI-X through social media, print, or community referral a single destination to learn more, find their nearest machine, and feel confident using it.
