SHOUT! | Sexuality and Relationship Education for People with Disability

Overview
Sexual Health Out and About (SHOUT) is a CERSH initiative for healthcare workers who recognise the importance of positive sexual health messages and access to means of prevention of STIs for rural young people.
CERSH has partnered with RUBIX Support to bring you a webinar on creating safe environments for people with disability to access relationships and sexuality education.
People with disability have the same right to healthy relationships and accurate sexuality education as anyone else, yet this remains a frequently overlooked area of professional development across the sector. Delivered by qualified Developmental Educators who are also registered PBS Practitioners, RUBIX Support's SRE training gives teams the knowledge, language and confidence to understand sexuality education as a human right, respond supportively to related questions and behaviours, and create safe environments for people with disability to express their identity and seek information.
This presentation will include:
- Why sexuality and relationship education is important for people with disability and why it is often overlooked
- Impacts of when people with disability are not provided with sexuality and relationship education
- Puberty and awareness
- Case study examples
About the presenter
Courtney King has 10 years of experience working with students with disabilities. While studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary/Disability Studies), she worked as an education support aide, gaining valuable experience supporting individuals with disabilities at a mainstream high school, primary school and special school. Once graduated, she began teaching in Special Education where she remained for five years. During this time, she taught in the classroom and as a specialist teacher in Drug and Alcohol Education and Sexuality and Relationships Education (SRE).
Courtney is endlessly passionate about SRE because it is a human right and she believes that everyone deserves to have a range of healthy and fulfilling relationships, alongside a toolbox of supports and skills to keep themselves safe, happy and healthy. She utilises a trauma-informed, harm-reduction approach and is dedicated to adapting her teaching to meet each participant’s individual needs.
